Macau—The January Macau Jewelry and Watch Fair will debut from Jan. 10-13, 2008, at the Cotai Strip Convention and Exhibition Center at The Venetian Macao, a move organizers say is a milestone that will make Macau "the Las Vegas of Asia," for the jewelry industry.

The fair, the first-ever international jewelry trade fair established at the beginning of the year in Macau, is organized by CMP Asia, which is also the organizer of the Hong Kong Jewelry and Watch Fair held every year in June and September. Macau is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China, along with Hong Kong.

"We believe that the Macau Jewelry and Watch Fair will strengthen Asia's leading position in the international jewelry industry," Jewelry Fairs of CMP Asia Director Celine Lau said in a press release issued on Monday. "With the concept of bringing business and entertainment together in one stop, the exhibition venue provides exhibitors and visitors with a spectrum of leisure activities from which to choose after conducting business at the fair during the day."

Macau's mild climate is expected to be a draw for European buyers, especially, she added.

As of July, more than 300 exhibitors from all over the world have confirmed they will participate in the Macau event. Featured at the event will be a range of jewelry products, including antique and estate jewelry, fine jewelry, finished jewelry, silver jewelry, jewelry watches, diamonds, pearls, gemstones, materials and related products and services, meeting the needs of buyers from different industry sectors. In addition to group pavilions from Antwerp, Israel, Korea and Turkey, individual exhibitors from Antwerp, mainland China, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Turkey and the United States will participate.

One of the highlights of the fair will be the Fine Design Pavilion, which will include more than 40 renowned jewelry houses, high-end jewelers and private collectors from all over the world. The fair hours will be from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 10-12, and from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 13.
