Barneys likely to give already bustling Union Square retailers lift

This week, Barneys New York opens in the Union Square area of San Francisco, a city that has been slow to recover from the economic lag brought on by the dot-com bubble burst and 9/11. A number of new stores, particularly those in the luxury retail market, have been opening recently and many are within a five-mile radius.

Barneys may face competition from other high-end retailers such as Wilkes Bashford Co., Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Shreve and Co., but in the midst of San Francisco's recovery, there seems to be enough business to go around. For the period ended March 31, sales tax from apparel merchants in Union Square produced $3.8 million. And the lucrative district is expecting several more retailers, including jeweler De Beers, couture clothier Prada and designer Helmut Lang.

Retail consultant Helen Bulwick of New Market Solutions in Oakland feels there's nothing comparable to Barneys in Union Square. It is "great fashion apparel, high quality, urban and young."
