Warning issued in Denver for traveling jewelry salespeople

Denver—According to the Jewelers' Security Alliance, the Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force has issued an alert for traveling jewelry salespeople in the Denver, Colo., area.

The task force, composed of the FBI and local police, reports that six robberies of traveling jewelry salespeople, netting $5.1 million, have occurred in the area since March by members of South American Theft Groups.

The most recent robbery took place in a hotel parking lot on Nov. 14. The alert lists the following common elements of the robberies:

* Victims had visited either the Merchandise Mart, the Jewelry Exchange Building or Cherry Creek jewelry stores prior to the robberies.

* The robbers appeared on video following the victims for up to three days prior to the robberies.

* The robbers drove numerous rental-style vehicles, including Dodge Grand Caravans, Chevrolet Impalas or Chevrolet Trailblazers while following the victims.

* The robbers, men ages 20-40, numbered from three to eight and used knives or guns to commit the robberies.

* The robbers knew prior to the robberies where the victims kept their merchandise in their cars.

The task force asks traveling salespeople who think they are being followed to call the Denver FBI at (303)-269-7171 and ask for Agent Grusing or Detective Woodward. If traveling salespeople know they are being followed and the preceding criteria apply, dial 911.
