IJO tightens accreditation process

Norwalk, Conn.—The Independent Jewelers Organization (IJO), one of the trade’s largest jewelry-buying groups, has designed a new program that places stricter standards on Master IJO Jewelers' gemological practices.

To obtain the IJO's new Accredited Gem Lab status, member jewelers must meet specific standards, including the commitment to keep a GIA Graduate Gemologist on staff as well as selected equipment and instruments in-store. Specifically, member jewelers must have a binocular microscope, a polariscope, a refractometer, a master set of color-grading stones or a colorimeter, and a scale.

The IJO asks that member jewelers send the organization photographs of this equipment as well as a certificate of the on-staff gemologist's Graduate Gemologist degree. The IJO will then send qualified applicants a Certification of Distinction counter card, a logo mark and window decal, a signed Certificate of Achievement and a personalized announcement.

IJO Chairman Richard Swetz said the organization is pleased to announce the stricter standards.

"The Accredited Gem Lab status gives additional value and relevance to our participating members and their expert staff," Swetz said in a statement. "It also provides a significant service to the community at large and underscores the trust that comes with doing business with a Master IJO Jeweler."
