Minneapolis—Same-store sales increased 4.8 percent at Target Corp. for the 52 weeks ended Jan. 28, the company announced today.

Calendar irregularities require the company to compare the 53-week period ended Feb. 3, 2007, to the 52-week period ended Jan. 28, 2006. On that basis, same-store sales increased 6.6 percent and total sales increased 12.9 percent to $57.9 billion.

Based on an equal-length fourth quarter, same-store sales increased 4.8 percent. On the basis of an unequal quarter, same-store sales increased 10.5 percent, and total sales increased 16.3 percent to $19.3 billion.

Based on an equal-length month, January same-store sales increased 5.1 percent. On the basis of an unequal month, same-store sales increased 31.9 percent, and total sales surged 37.3 percent to $4.9 billion.

Target's operations include large, general-merchandise discount stores and a fully integrated online business. The company currently operates 1,488 stores in 47 states.

Analysts believe that by 2010, Target will approach $100 billion in sales, nearly doubling its current size and becoming an even bigger competitive force.
