New York--PGA Tour golfer Sergio Garcia visited Omega's flagship store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on Monday, bringing some star power to the new boutique, where he learned about watchmaking and offered golf lessons to a group of local children.
An ambassador for the brand since 2003, Garcia made the appearance to donate his personal Omega "Mission Hills Double Eagle Chronograph Constellation" timepiece, the latest addition to the store's "Ambassador Collection Series" of autographed watches, which already includes watches by two fellow Omega ambassadors: Olympic swimming champ Michael Phelps and astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
Although he's a fan of Omega and its watches and a proud ambassador, Garcia told National Jeweler that he doesn't like to wear a watch while playing golf because it places extra weight on his hand.
"I usually don't wear them when I play, but it's been good to find out about the technology that is behind the watch," Garcia said. "This one, the Constellation, is a great watch and it's very light."
Garcia said he has been proud to be an Omega ambassador--and he owns probably 10 or 12 of the brand's watches.
"They've been very generous," he said.
While visiting the section of the store where its four on-site watchmakers do repairs, Garcia donned a white lab coat and loupe and tried his hand at taking a watch apart to see the interior.
The golfer visited New York fresh from the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., which he described as a "decent week," although he did not win. His next stop is The Barclays tournament, which begins today and runs through Sunday in nearby Jersey City, N.J.
During the Omega event, Garcia worked with children from The First Tee of Metropolitan New York program, who were invited as special guests along with members of the Golf Club at Chelsea Piers. Omega plans to donate 15 percent of the proceeds from timepieces sold during the event to The First Tee.
A native of Castello, Spain, Garcia started playing golf when he was three. He reached a career high ranking of two after winning the HSBC Champions Tournament last November and has spent much of his career in the top 10 in Official World Golf Rankings.
His advice for young golfers?
"The main thing I would say is to enjoy the game and try to be happy with life," Garcia said. The Omega brand serves as the official timekeeper for some of the world's leading tournaments and, in 2007, the brand became the title sponsor for the World Cup of Golf. Garcia is scheduled to represent Spain at the 2009 Omega Mission Hills World Cup, the 55th World Cup of Golf, which will take place from Nov. 26-29 at the Mission Hills Olazabal Course in Shenzhen, China.
