London—A Mudge and Dutton mahogany longcase clock, which sold for $94,908, was the top lot at Sotheby's Fine Clocks, Watches, Scientific Instruments and Mechanical Music auction, held here.

The clock, dated from 1775, was sold to a private collector in the United Kingdom.

"Overall, we are very pleased with the results of today's sale, which demonstrate the strength of the market for rare and exceptional watches," said Jonathan Darracott, head of Sotheby's Watches department London, in a statement. "We are particularly pleased that the three Breguet watches in the top ten were successfully bought by the Breguet Museum."

The three Breguet watches were a gold open-faced pocket watch with quarter-repeating function for $90,389; a gold open-faced pocket watch with jumping-hour and jumping-seconds functions for $67,792; and a gold Montré à Tact watch with chain and key for $56,493.

Other top-selling items were a rare, Grande Sonnerie gilt-brass table clock from Ellicott, London, that sold for $90,389; and a very rare, platinum, gold and diamond lozenge-form bracelet-watch made by Cartier that went for $79,090.
