Mondaine breaks ground on new factory

Zurich, Switzerland—The Mondaine Watch brand, featuring the iconic Swiss railway station clock design, has broken ground on a new state-of-the-art watch factory in Biberist, Switzerland.

Nearly 200 pillars will be drilled 17 meters into the ground for the solid base of the new factory, which will be located near the current facility in Solothurn, Switzerland.

There will be a new bridge across the Aare River for pedestrians and bicyclists to access the city of Solothurn. A new bridge for cars will provide easy access to the factory from Zurich, Berne, Bienne and other cities.

Mondaine's new workshops will be four times the size of those in the current plant, and are slated to open in early 2009.

Assembly of the Mondaine brand, Luminox and Camel, as well as private-label watches, will take place in a "clean room" built according to strict codes. Additionally, assembly of parts such as dials, hands LLT (Luminox Light Tubes) and other components will take place at the new factory. Quality control of parts and final product, as well as storage of point-of-production materials, displays and other products will be housed in the new building. The factory will also be a distribution point of watches, jewelry and materials to all international markets.

Mondaine Watch, creator of the official "Swiss Railways Watch" collection, which was licensed by the Swiss Railways SBB, launched more than 20 years ago. It represents the consumers' version of the Swiss Railways Clock. In Switzerland, 3,000 of these famous Swiss clocks have indicated the precise time at all Swiss train stations for more than 60 years.
