Fate of FH 'Swiss Made' ordinance to be determined in April

Biel, Switzerland—Although the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) voted in favor of urging the Swiss government to tighten the restrictions that allow watches to bear "Swiss Made" labels, the fate of its Swiss Made watch ordinance won't be realized until April 2008.

The suggested restrictions require that 80 percent of the costs of mechanical watch production and 60 percent of the costs of electronic watch production occur in Switzerland. As it stands now, only half of the production costs of a Swiss Made watch must occur in Switzerland to get the label.

In addition, raw materials, precious stones and batteries won't factor into production costs; however, prototype development and all technical construction would have to occur in Switzerland for a watch to be dubbed Swiss Made.

FH President Jean-Daniel Pasche told National Jeweler that the Swiss Federal Council has not yet decided on its proposal to reinforce the Swiss Made watch ordinance because it is simultaneously proposing a revision of the trademark law to reinforce the general protection of the Swiss Made label for all economic sectors, the so called Swissness project. Pasche said the fate of both the Swissness project and the FH proposal will be determined after the Swiss Federal Council has finished its public-review process of the revised trademark law in April 2008.
