Antiquorum beats '07 results in spring auction

Geneva—Despite currency concerns, watch auctioneer Antiquorum said it fared well in its first auction of 2008, fetching $9.7 million in total sales, with 70 percent of its 806 lots sold in terms of units and 120 percent sold by value.

The auction house's Important Collectors' Watches, Pocket Watches and Clocks auction was held at the Grand Hotel Kempinski in Geneva on March 15 and 16.

"Considering the wild fluctuations in the exchange rates and the uncertain economic climate that resulted, surpassing last year's spring sale by 50 percent is very satisfactory," Antiquorum principal auctioneer Brandon Thomas said after the auction, according to a press release issued on Monday.

Among the highlights was the sale of a Rolex that once belonged to Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, which sold for about $36,436 (36,000 Swiss francs), some four times its pre-sale estimate.

The collectors who attended in person were competing against a record 430 registered online bidders and an exceptional amount of telephone bidders, the auction house said. International participation was especially heavy from Asia, Russia, Germany and France, with one-fifth of the lots sold via online bidding.

Other highlights of the sale were lot 413, the Patek Philippe Geneve "Ref. 2499 Fourth Series," which sold for $360,386, and lot 551, the Nicolas-Constant Lemaire's "Boite a Surprise" with concealed erotic automata, which was hallmarked in Paris 1784-85, and sold for about $240,932.

A Lange and Sohne's "Pour le Mérite" watch in platinum (lot 243) went for $252,678, and the very fine, unique, ultra-complicated "Grande Sonnerie" watch by Gérald Genta in yellow gold (lot 241) brought a sales price of $240,742.
