Raymond Weil sues Charlize Theron

New York—Swiss watchmaker Raymond Weil has sued actress Charlize Theron for breach of contract after the actress allegedly reneged on the terms of an endorsement deal with the brand.

Gil Ozir, vice president of marketing for Raymond Weil, confirmed to National Jeweler that the company had filed the suit in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan on Monday but declined to give details.

"The contractual clauses set out for the duration of the [endorsement] agreement stipulated that Ms. Theron was not allowed to wear publicly nor endorse or promote any other watch brands," according to a Raymond Weil statement. "However, over the course of the last several months, while the actress was still under contract to the watch firm, Raymond Weil discovered that Ms. Theron had disregarded her contractual obligations and in fact publicly wore and endorsed competing brands."

Citing court papers, news reports claim that Theron appeared at a news conference in March 2006 wearing a Christian Dior watch and in an advertising campaign for a necklace benefiting an AIDS charity from March 2006 to December 2006.

"The various attempts made my Raymond Weil to find a mutually agreeable and amicable solution have regrettably been unsuccessful, and the watchmaker has reluctantly taken legal action against the actress for damages before the Supreme Court of the State of New York," according to the Raymond Weil statement.

The lawsuit does not specify how much Raymond Weil will seek in damages.
