Patek 'Sky Moon' to headline Patrizzi sale

September 09, 2009
Patek Philippe's "Sky Moon Tourbillon," Ref. 5002, is expected to fetch between $1.1 million and $1.3 million at Patrizzi's and Co.'s Oct. 7 sale.

New York--Patrizzi and Co. will host its "Important Pocket Watches, Wristwatches and Clocks" sale here on Oct. 7, highlighted by a number of exceptional timepieces from Patek Philippe.

Included among the offerings is the double-faced "Sky Moon Tourbillon," Ref. 5002, a timepiece the auction house described in a media release as "the most complicated wristwatch ever produced by the Swiss manufacture."

The timepiece features a rare combination of 18-karat yellow gold with a black dial. The dial displays the perpetual calendar and minute repeater with a tourbillon escapement, while the reverse side presents a sky chart and sidereal time. It is estimated to sell for $1.1 million to $1.3 million. Patrizzi and Co. does not charge a buyer's commission, meaning that the final sale price reflects the actual value of the timepiece.

Additional highlights among the 150 timepieces slated to hit the auction block include two limited-edition sets of Patek Philippe men's watches featuring cloisonne enamel dials. The offerings include a set of four platinum watches with "Barques" dials, Ref. 5076, as well as a set of four white gold "Birds of Paradise" wristwatches, Ref. 5075. Only 10 sets of the former were produced, and 15 sets of the latter were produced.

The New York sale is the first in a series of fall/winter auctions, with additional sales to take place in Geneva and Milan.

The traditional auction on Oct. 7 will take place at Patrizzi and Co.'s Madison Avenue showroom, and buyers can also place written, phone or online bids via the company's Web site, PatrizziAuction.com.

Public previews will take place at the showroom on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 and 6. During the preview dates, company watch experts will also be offering appraisals and taking consignments for future auctions.

"We expect significant international interest in this auction, as these are some of the most exceptional and sought-after timepieces in horology," Patrizzi and Co. Chief Executive Officer Osvaldo Patrizzi said in a media release. "Collectors know when they buy from us they save 20 percent or more because do not charge a buyer's commission. For the seller, we increase profits."
