Matsuda Collection watches up for auction

New York--The Matsuda Collection of rare Patek Philippe wristwatches is among the highlights of the upcoming Antiquorum auction, scheduled for Thursday in New York.

According to a release, the Matsuda Collection is one of the most prominent private collections of Patek Philippe watches, as well as Ferrari automobiles, in the world.

Yoshiho Matsuda is a native of Japan who was introduced to Western culture when living in the United States and, since that time, has developed a broad knowledge and appreciation for collecting artwork, paintings and rare watches.

His collection of Patek Philippe watches includes:

--Ref. 3939HP, sold on Feb. 12, 2000, is a minute-repeating platinum wristwatch with one-minute tourbillon regulator, custom-ordered black dial and an extra silver dial that's estimated to fetch between $400,000 and $600,000.
 
--Ref. 3974, sold on March 3, 2000, is a unique, astronomic, minute-repeating, self-winding, platinum wristwatch with custom-ordered black dial, perpetual calendar, leap-year indication and moon phases. This watch is accompanied by a solid platinum caseback and a second silver dial and is estimated to fetch between $450,000 and $650,000.
 
--Ref. 5013, production of this reference started in 1992 and it was sold on June 26, 2000. It is a tonneau-shaped, minute-repeating, astronomic, self-winding, platinum gentleman's wristwatch with retrograde perpetual calendar, moon phases, leap-year indication and original silver dial. It is expected to fetch between $450,000 and $650,000.

--Ref. 5016, sold on Feb. 12, 2000, is an astronomic, minute-repeating, platinum wristwatch with custom-ordered black dial, one-minute tourbillon regulator, retrograde perpetual calendar and moon phases. This watch comes with a solid platinum caseback and has a second silver dial. It's estimated to fetch between $450,000 and $650,000.

The first session of the auction is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., and the second session is set to start at 2:00 p.m.

Previews are scheduled for today until 6:30 p.m., Wednesday from 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m., and on the day of the auction beginning at 9:00 a.m.
